Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Masoor dal [red lentils]
  • 1 large onion [fine chopped]
  • 6 Garlic Cloves mashed
  • 1 Tablespoon ginger mashed
  • 2 Green Chilies
  • 3-4 Tomatoes
  • 1 Tablespoon Red Chili powder[Or to taste]
  • 1 Tablespoon Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Cumin Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt [or to taste]
  • 1 Tablespoon Garam Masala Powder
  • 1/4 Cup Cooking Oil 

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the lentils with fresh water
  2. Add water to a pot enough to cover lentils double the volume and bring to boil on high heat
  3. Once boiled for approx. 5 minutes remove any foam that comes to the top of water
  4. Lower the heat and let it cook for 15 minutes so it become tender
  5. In a separate pot on medium heat add the oil and light fry the onion until golden brown then add tomatoes, garlic and ginger paste
  6. Add half cup water and stir lightly while adding, Chili, Coriander, Cumin, Garam Masala powder, salt and green chili
  7. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes until water is dried out and gravy is left
  8. Bring in the lentils to the gravy, stir to combine them together
  9. Let it cook for 5 minutes
The lentils are ready to be served with pita bread or boiled rice.
